by John Dye Zoe (the Zephyr) Nelson finished in 16:50 with no one else in sight, as usual, but without her usual ear-to-ear grin. Her side ached. "I felt really great the first two miles, and then my side started to ache and I slowed down in the third mile," Nelson said. "I'm sort of mad; I want to go re-do it." Zoe wanted to break the course record of 16:46 she set 2 weeks ago, and she was several seconds ahead of that pace after a mile in 5:17 and two miles in 11:00. But the grin should return to her face when she contemplates her sophomore season accomplishments. She was undefeated and set a course record on every course she stepped foot on, usually by huge margins. Today's "disappointment" was a new state meet record by 39 seconds, breaking her own record of last year. That is all the more remarkable considering that last year's race was an all-out war with 3-time defending state champion Heidi Lane, the two matching strides the entire 3 miles, while this year Nelson ran alone with no opponent but the clock after the opening steps. Furthermore, today's time gives Nelson the fastest three 3-mile times in the country this season. Zoe already has a new outfit to wear at the Foot Locker West regional at Mt. SAC December 7, and she hopes to wear it again a week later at San Diego in a repeat visit to the Foot Locker national finals.
