- Special Preview by Jim Conaway - Meet officials plan to honor 1955 state cross country champions KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Oct. 12) – Honoring St. Louis Sumner High School’s 1955 boys cross country state championship team will be an added feature of the 11th annual Dick and Ron Gregory Invitational boys and girls high school cross country meet scheduled for Saturday on the Bandstand Pavilion course at Swope Park. Eleven schools – Kansas City School District schools Central, Lincoln Prep, Northeast, Paseo Academy, Van Horn and Westport along with Hickman Mills, Kansas City Lutheran, Rockhurst, Ruskin and West Plains, the Class 3 defending boys and girls state champions – have returned contracts to participate in the meet sponsored by the Kansas City School District. The meet will begin at 11 a.m. with a race for middle school boys and girls. The junior varsity boys and girls race is scheduled for 11:15. The varsity boys will toe the line at 11:30 and the varsity girls will run at noon. The awards ceremony is slated for 12:30. The meet, meanwhile, has been named in honor of the Gregory brothers Dick and Ron, the only brother combination in the history of the state meet to claim four individual championships. Dick – who is known for his work as a Civil Rights activist, nutritionist and comedian – was the 1950 individual state champion as a junior while attending Sumner High School in St. Louis. Dick later attended and run track and cross country at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale where he became the first track or cross country athlete to receive the school’s Outstanding Athlete award during the 1953-54 school year. Ron was a three-time individual state champion in 1954, 1955 and 1956 for Sumner and helped his team win the state championship in 1955. He and Chris Zinn of West Plains are the only two athletes in state meet history who have captured three individual state championships. Ron later attended and run track and cross country at the University of Notre Dame where he won All-America honors in both sports and set a world indoor record for the 880-yard run. When Ron and his Sumner teammates won the state meet on Friday, Oct. 28, 1955, the state meet wasn’t the same type of affair as it is today. To start with, the meet was held at Forest Park in St. Louis instead of the Oak Hills Golf Course in Jefferson City. Then the racing distance was two miles instead of 5,000 meters. Only one class instead of the current four-class system existed. Plus teams did not have to qualify for the meet. If a coach felt his team was good enough, he simply entered his team in the meet. And it was a meet for boys only. The Public High League of St. Louis ended up with the top three teams as 19 schools earned team scores. Sumner with its top five finishing among the top 15 edged Hadley Tech 39-47. Vashon was third with 60. Gregory’s winning effort of 10 minutes and 50.4 seconds was supported by junior Thomas Halton, senior Frank Hicks, junior Rufus Washington and senior Robert Coburn, respectively, who placed seventh, ninth, 11th and 13th. “It’s pretty amazing as I look back upon it,” Ron Gregory said. “When I enrolled as a freshman at Sumner High School, it was interesting and funny with how they had everything planned and ready for me because of the success my brother Dick had had. They had my class schedule planned and my sweats ready. Yet running long distance was the last thing in the world I wanted to do. I tried every trick in the book to get out of it from saying I had to baby sit to lying about lying about a job I didn’t have. “After I won the mile in a varsity track meet against St. Mary’s, that changed everything. Running became my life and I can remember how the older men in my neighborhood would watch my training routine of running a number of times around the block. Being motivated to train wasn’t a problem after that.” Gregory and his teammates thought they had finished second as a team shortly after completing the 1955 state meet run which was contested in pouring rain. Hicks, usually the squad’s No. 2 runner, fell after being passed by Vashon’s Wayne Imes shortly before reaching the finish chute. Hicks, who had lost only to Gregory prior to the meet, managed to regain his balance and stumble to a ninth-place finish. Then Warren St. James, the Sumner coach, made an error in adding his team score and first thought his team had finished two points behind Hadley Tech when he compared his score with Hadley coach Jim Hutton. But the error was corrected in time for the awards presentation. “As I look back on it, what happened was amazing,” said Louis Virdue, who later won individual championships in 1959 and 1960 for Vashon High School. “The black community in St. Louis was more tightly-knit at that time and athletes who had success in cross country were highly-regarded. My older brother Aaron (a two-time state meet medalist) and I took what we did in cross country very seriously. I can remember where we would spend many a Saturday afternoon in the front of the mirror in our living room and we would mimic the arm action of runners while saying something like ‘I’m Gregory.’” Vashon followed Sumner as an all-black high school to win state championships in boys cross country by claiming the 1956, 1958 and 1960 meets. Gregory and his teammates will be participating Saturday in the famed Million Man March in Washington, D.C., and won’t be in attendance at the Gregory meet. But officials of the Public High League in St. Louis plan honor Gregory and his 1955 teammates at their championship meet on Tues., Oct. 18 at O’Fallon Park. Officials of the Missouri State High School Activities Association also plan to recognize the group at the state championship meet on Sat., Nov. 5 at the Oak Hills Golf Center in Jefferson City.
