Trindon Holliday wins all-senior final

This was a rare happening - nothing but seniors speeding into the six-lane final.

It was Zachary, Louisiana's Trindon Holliday leading the way in 6.74 out of semi three and Winston Salem, NC's J-Mee Samuels clocking 6.78 out of semi two. Fastest of all underclassmen - but just eighth over-all in the semis - was Virginia Beach, Va. junior Charles Clark in 6.93. Topeka, Kansas' Jared Huske, destined to win the Nike 60 hurdles crown, missed the dash final by just 9/100ths, his 6.96 ranking ninth over-all.

There was no Holliday-spirit, though, for the other five finalists who saw too much of Trindon's flying feet. LSU-bound Holliday (6.64) was a clearcut winner over Samuels (6.70) and New Brunswick, Canada flash Michael LeBlanc (6.84.)

Sarah Matthews asserts herself in final

Little separated the speediest four out of the five-race morning prelims.
Longmont, Colorado junior Sarah Matthew (7.62), Hampton, Va. junior Francena
McCorory (7.63), Great Valley, Pa. senior Janessa Murphy (7.64) and Union City,
California junior Kristina Davis (7.67), all heat winners, gave no clue as to
eventual results.

Pace quickened in the semis - McCorory running 7.54, Matthew 7.59, Murphy
7.61 and Aurora, Colorado sophomore Ashley Cruder 7.62.

But it was all-Matthew in the final. Her 7.45 might be the slowest-ever Nike
winning time, but she still built open territory on runner-up McCorory (7.57)
and third-placer Murphy (7.62.) Cruder, lone soph to make the final, settled
for sixth in 7.65.

"I can't believe it's happening," said the delighted Matthews. "Everything
worked. It was a perfect race. The blocks were great. I got my hips in the right
position. I locked it. It was a sight."

She gave much credit to Coach Well's Colorado Flyers program and her club
teammates.

"These girls are my inspiration," "she said. "They work so hard. If it wasn't
for them, I might not be here. I thank them and I thank my coach. All the
the work that they put into me, all the days they stayed after practice to help
me and push me."
