100 meters - J-Mee Samuels NC 10.34, Alexandria Anderson IL 11.39 start doubles with US#1 timesBoys - Girls - photos by John Dye; text by Pete Cava
Elite performances in blue BoysJ-Mee Samuels (center) edges fellow North Carolinian Jerek Hewitt (left). Pete Cava's report 100 meters: Aided by a 1.2 mps wind, J-Mee Samuels took command a little before the halfway mark and held off Jerek Hewett at the finish. Samuels, from Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem , N.C. , finished in 10.34, the year's fastest prep time. Hewett, from South Brunswick High School in Shallotte, N.C, was second in 10.39, a personal best. Samuels, a double winner at the Great Southwest Invitational in Albuquerque on June, took the win in stride. “Right now I'm not worried about anybody, said the 5-7, 167-pound Arkansas signee. “I'm pretty much focusing on college times, not my high school times. I need to use whatever they run in college as my competition.” A year ago, Samuels placed fourth in this race. He'll run the 200m Sunday. Third place went to Michael Garvin ( Upper Saddle River , NJ ) in 10.46.
