Texas Relays Day 1 - Skyline Shocker!!!
First day of competition of the 2005 Texas Relays saw one of the state
leaders in the 4x400 relay not qualify for Saturday's final. Dallas Skyline
came into the meet with the state's second fastest time at 3:46.34, but
fail to qualify. Skyline ran the prelims without Krystin Lacy or Chanelle
Curry on the relay. The decision to hold out both of these young ladies
proved to be costly. Lancaster led all qualifiers with a time of 3:45.15.
Skyline will be running the 4x200 relay, leading all qualifiers with a
time of 1:36.34. Visiting Long Beach Wilson won it's qualifying round
with a 1:37.09.
Cinco Ranch is State Ready!!!
The boys from Cinco Ranch made the statement today that they will be
defending their state crown. They did not do it with talk, but with the
action displayed on the track. Things got started for Cinco in the 110
hurdles where Trevor Gerland put it down in the prelims leading all qualifiers
with a time of 14.04. Then they stepped out on the track for the 4x200
relay. They already have the state's fastest time at 1:25.67. So how do
you prove that you are legit, you bust a 1:24.97 in front of everybody.
Cinco Ranch's time is 2 seconds faster than the 2nd place qualifier Dallas
Carter. How do you close out your day? You bring in the state leader,
correction, national leader in the high jump to put on a show for the
crowd...and that's exactly what Sr. Scott Sellars did. He didn't enter
the competition until 6-11...after everybody else was out. He finished
the competition, clearing 7-5. The crowd was cheering and clapping while
he was making his attempts. “This is a special meet. When you come
to a meet like this, you just look around at the atmosphere and see so
much prestige. I cleared seven feet five inches once before in an indoor
track meet, but this is the first time I have done it outdoors. I am always
shooting for the national records, but this win was great” stated
Sellars. With district starting next week, the quest for a second title
begins.
The sky is the limit for Parker!!!
McKinney's Britany Parker continued her dominance in the girl's pole
vault. Already the state record holder at 13-2, Parker was able to best
the competition by vaulting 12-10. She made three attempts at a state
new record of 13-2 1/2. Not totally happy with her performance, but a
win is a win. “Texas Relays is a great place to compete. I came out
here and there was a lot of competition. I just wanted to do my best and
I was able to win. I did not feel like it was the best I can do, but it
was good enough to win the meet" expressed Parker.
Texas Relays Day 2 - Oh give me a home where the Buffaloes roam!!!
Mike Myers stadium was the home where the buffaloes definitely roamed.
The buffaloes of Fort Bend Marshall completed a 4x400 sweep during the
2005 Texas Relays. First the Lady Buffaloes, took to the stage. Lancaster,
actually led most of the way and had a 2 meter lead when Jr. Brandi Cross
got the stick. Lancaster's Keshima Starks held off Cross until the last
100 meters. That is when Cross turned on the jets to help lead her team
to victory. Brandi finished the last leg with a spilt of 53.8. Their winning
time of 3:41.64 leads the state. The team is starting to gel and that
is important as district week is already upon us. “I thought we did
really well. It was a personal best for us. We get along very well, so
that is a big part of our success. We have a great coach that teaches
us to fight through pain. This race proves that crying and hurting in
practice pays off in the end” stated Cross. Next up was the high
school boys 4x400. Marshall came into the finals leading all qualifiers
from the prelim heats, so the possibility of the sweep was possible. This
was a tough fought race as Jr. Brandon Washington held off a strong charge
from Beaumont Ozen's Wallace Franklin down the final backstretch to secure
the win and the sweep.
DFW athletes dominate the 1600!!!!
Dominating performances by Plano's Scott MacPherson and Plano West's
Erin Bedell in the 1600 displayed why these two are the heavy favorites
in May. Both athletes led their respective race from start to finish.
Scott, however, was challenge the last 200 meters by second place finisher
Brownfield's Gary Lackey Jr. During the final 100 meters MacPherson pulled
away to win the event. Bedell, on the other hand, only competition was
the clock. She easily won the race, but fell short of her Mike Myers stadium
record she set last year at the State Championships. However, her time
of 4:48.16 did set a new Texas Relays record. “I came in wanting
to get a good start, pace myself in the middle laps, then finish strong.
I did not do as well in the middle laps as I would have liked. They are
the hardest because you really have to pace yourself. The wind was a factor,
but I think it affected everyone" stated Bedell.
The proof is in the Pudding!!!
Timing methods have always been questionable here in Texas. The state
leader Brandon James was clocked at a 10.19 last week during a local track
meet. On the big stage, the Jr. from Cuero proved to the thousands of
fan that he was legit. James won the division 2 100 meter title in a blazing
time of 10.43. It was a tight race that also showcased a 10.51 clocking
from Kerens Ontario Jefferson. Both runners were able to perform big time
in a big time atmosphere. James' time actually tied the old record set
by Country Day's and former Texas Longhorn Amar Johnson, but since the
wind was over the allowable it will not count. “I came out wanting
to break the meet record, but tying it is good enough. My start could
have been better and I could have stayed in my drive phase longer, but
overall, it was a good race. There was a lot of competition coming from
lane four, Ontario Jefferson, and I had to concentrate on not making a
mistake because the race is over so quickly, you don't have a chance to
recover. You have to get out good, then end good, and I think I did that"
said James.

Plano sr Scott MacPherson led from the gun on Saturday in windy conditions
to win in 4:18.35 (64.1, 65.7, 63.8, 64.8) over fast closing Brownfield
sr Gary Lackey. McPherson’s win here along with his 3200 on Friday
night is only the 2nd successful 1600/3200 double in Relays history joining
Adam Dailey’s same-day double in 1995.

Plano sr Scott MacPherson led the entire race (63.0 1st 400) and held
a significant lead until challenged by Jesuit Tampa FL sr Andy Biladeau
with 2 laps remaining. Biladeau had looked to be making a move on lap
5, but caught the rail and fell into the infield. MacPherson and fellow
Foot Locker finalist Biladeau battled over the last two laps, but were
both tiring noticeably. MacPherson ran 9:02.19 (63.0, 67.4, 67.9, 68.3
<4:26.6>, 67.6, 68.6, 69.9, 69.5) with fellow Foot Locker finalists
Biladeau and Grace Prep sr Daniel LaCava 2nd and 3rd in 9:04.12 and 9:16.23.

Cinco Ranch sr Trevor Gerland dominated with a 13.80w (14.04 wind-legal
prelim). Gerlands previous US leading 13.85 gives the strong Cinco Ranch
team 3 US leaders after this meet’s Scott Sellers 7-5 HJ and a 1:24.97
4x200 prelim. Both Gerland and Sellers ran legs on the 4x200.
2000m Steeplechase
Lufkin sr Rich Warner takes the title in 6:15.91.

Carter Dallas won another tight race over DeSoto 41.28 to 41.31. This
follows last week’s US#2 41.01 Carter victory over DeSoto’s
US#3 41.02. A total of 6 teams broke Dyestat Elite 42.00.

This race was highly anticipated after Cinco Ranch’s US leading and
#18 all-time 1:24.97 prelim with their anchor man appearing to shutdown
early. Unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate on Saturday as
winds on the backstretch effected performances all day long. Cinco Ranch
still won handily in 1:25.14 over Ozen Beaumont’s 1:25.79. A total
of 8 teams were under Dyestat Elite 1:28.60.
4x400
Thurgood Marshall Sugarland took a thriller 3:14.78 to 3:14.81 over Ozen
Beaumont after running a US#2 3:14.37 on Friday. Marshall’s splits
were 50.5, 47.5, 48.9 and 47.9. Ozen split 50.4, 48.8, 47.0 and 48.6.
A total of 9 teams were under Dyestat Elite 3:20.

The Woodlands started their run of 3 relay titles overall by capturing
this one in 7:51.35 without their top 800 man. All four runners split
1:57 point. Edinburg North ran well with a 7:53.55 in 2nd.
Sprint Medley
The Woodlands ran a US leading 3:28.04 anchored by sr Luke Hansen in 1:52.8.
Madison San Antonio was 2nd in 3:32.62 including a 46 split from sr Quentin
Summers.
Distance Medley
The Woodlands trailed early in its 10:25.95 win, but got a strong 800
leg from sr Ryan Gostic to put sr Luke Hansen in striking position to
anchor his 2nd winner of the meet. There was a tight battle for silver
and bronze with Memorial Edmond OK 2nd in 10:30.32, Marcus Flower Mound
3rd in 10.30.39 and Edinburg North 4th in 10:30.42.

Comanche sr Chayden Feist cleared 16-0 for the title.
High Jump
Cinco Ranch sr Scott Sellers was nursing a sore ankle, but that didn’t
keep him from leaping a meet record and US leading 7-5 for his 3rd consecutive

Another anticipated dual between Wilson Long Beach CA and Skyline Dallas
didn’t work out. Skyline’s Lacy was held out and then Skyline
was dq’d for a zone violation in the final. Wilson took the crown
in a US leading 1:36.13 (#10 all-time US) over Lancaster’s 1:38.53.
Skyline had turned in a US leading 1:36.43 (#12 all-time) during Friday’s
qualifying with Lacy.

Texas Relays Tidbits from Ronnie Moore
Kristin Lacy pulled a hamstring and didn't run in the finals, Wilson
dropped the baton in the 4x1 and Houston Westside ran a 3.57.71 in the
SMR. - Ronnie Moore has been a big poster on TrackTalk
Saturday Highlightsby Juan Plaza
Saturday started to look like rain and cool temps, around 8am, but as
noon came around the sun came out and warmed to near 80 degrees. It was
looking like perfect conditions for some sizzling performances.
However, the swirling winds at Mike Myers Stadium came from the southeast
and played a role in the outcome of some of the events. The short sprints
saw tailwinds that ranged from +0.9 m/s to +5 and change m/s. Most races
were well over the allowable 2.0 m/s. In the shorter relays most athletes
were not taking into consideration that the wind would dictate their success
or lack of.
The athletes running into the strong winds were being left by their eager
teammates time after time. Because in the shorter relays the exchanges
rely so much on precise timing the winds were throwing off the timing
for
the athletes that were not making the adjustments needed . Katy Cinco
Ranch's 4x200 in the final (1:25.14) lost at least half a second when
3rd leg Trevor Gerland, who ran an amazing leg, missed on the handoff
to the
anchor but his persistence paid off as he hung in there and managed to
complete the exchange very near the end of the exchange zone. Gerland
had to work extra hard running into that headwind and began to fatigue
and slow
down near the end of is 200m leg because of the fierce winds.
On the other side of the track, with strong winds at their backs, the
runners were running up on their teammates due to the wind as well. Not
too many teams appeared to have made the necessary adjustments needed
when
dealing with the effects of the elements. Hopefully in mid May the winds
calm, and they should, because as usual the Texas State meet should be

Friday Highlights
Day three of the meet kicks off the HS portion with mostly preliminaries.
Dallas Skyline sophomore April Williams is top qualifier in the 100 hurdles
at 14.14 while her teammates run 1:36.34 to qualify for the 4x200 final.
The Woodlands swept the girls and boys 4x800's with 9:20.17 and 7:51.35
winning times.
The boys 100m final looks to be a tight race as Dominique Stafford (Crowley
TX), Keelen Green (Sulfur Springs TX), and Daniel Johnson (Spring Woods
TX) all run between 10.68 and 10.69.
Scott Sellars won the high jump with an impressive 7-5. He tried 7-7,
missed badly once and was close twice. Sellars joined his Cinco Ranch
teammates to earlier in the day to run a nation leading 4x200 in 1:24.97
in the prelims. Should be hot in the finals.
Also, Cinco Ranch's 3d leg on the 4x2, Trevor Gerland, was the fastest
male 110 hurdler with a 14.04 (+1.6). Should be sub 14 with good conditions
expected Saturday.
In the boys 4x400 Ft. Bend Thurgood Marshall HS went 3:14.37 to lead
all qualifiers for Saturday's final.
In the evening competition, Amy Fowler of Lake Travis HS won the 3200
in 10:44.83 and Arkansas bound Scott MacPherson of Plano High won the
boys division in 9:02.19.
