Girls Freshman Mile

Sometimes the best-formulated seeding systems get untracked. Sometimes
athletes like Michelle Britto put their personal spin on someone else's computer
input.
So it was in this frosh mile, as Britto of just-down-the-road Woodbridge,
Va., came out out of the second of three sections to win it all in 5:12.12.
"With two laps to go, my coach (Adam Daniels) said 'go around them, go
around them,' so that's just what I did," said Britto.
Spurting to a 1:12 final 400, she overhauled Juliet Botorff of
Delaware's Adrenaline Track Club (5:12.37) to win it down the stretch and
both their times held up to best third-section winner Kristen Stone's 5:13.39 for
Cinco Ranch, Texas.
"That was a PR by a full second for me," said the elated Britto. "I
enjoyed this the whole time."
And so she smiled all the way home to Woodbridge.
First-section winner Cecelia Forshee's 5:24.94 for Chambersburg, Pa. took
13th over-all in the 26-runner field.
Meet record-holder Chantelle Dron's 5:00.22 for Central of Manchester, New
Hampshire in 2002 easily passed another test of time.
