text by Elliott Denman Jackie Areson will head to the University of Tennessee with a world of new confidence. Her 4:50.13 triumph in sensational fashion - running down front-running Bria Wetsch in the final 150 meters - convinces her she can run with just about any other contemporary. "Sure I was concerned about (Wetsch) being out there, I was concerned with everybody around me, but I've seen so many races that were decided on that last lap that it didn't bother me; I knew I had something left," said the Atlantic High of Delray Beach, Florida senior. Wetsch, of Victoria, Minnesota's Holy Family School, took it out in 1:09.3, 2:21.8 and 3:37.2 and stayed on top of the nine-runner field until the start of the backstretch of the final 200-meter circuit. But, for Wetsch, who came in with 4:49.9 credentials, it wasn't to be. As she tired and faded. First Areson and then Colleen Wetherbee of South Yarmouth, Mass. sprinted by. Wetherbee snared the silver in 4:51.22 as Wetsch landed third in 4:52.77. "My legs really tied up," said Wetsch. "I ran my best. It just wasn't my day." Three others broke five minutes - Columbia, Maryland's Allison Smith (4:57.09), Jackson, NJ's Amanda Marino (4:57.45) and Saratoga, NY's Lindsey Ferguson (4:59.72.) Wetherbee, Smith and Marino are juniors, Areson, Wetsch and Ferguson seniors. Top sophomore in the 26-runner, three-section field was Saratoga's Hannah Davidson, 14th over-all in 5:09.28. Sheridan High's Shelley Forbes (5:06.36) took the first section and Great Bridge's Kristy Tobin the second race (5:00.49.) |
