Girls Sprint Medley
Blazin' Raiders (Eleanor Roosevelt MD) 4:05.50
text by Elliott Denman Last year's sprint medley loss to Hopewell Valley, NJ - a race decided in the latter stages of the anchor 800 leg - still bothered the girls of the Blazin Raiders Track Club, a.k.a. Eleanor Roosevelt High of nearby Greenbelt, Md. So they went out and made all the right moves, and the perfect kind of amends. With senior Antoinette Arrington, junior Jacia Montgomery, junior Takecia Jameson and sophomore Tasha Stanley doing flawless stickwork, the Raiders took it all with a 4:05.50 romp over Kecoughton's 4:09.27 in the sixth and final section. Potomac School's 4:09.30, out of heat four, held up for third over-all. Fifth-heat winner Lenape of New Jersey wound up fourth in 4:11.02. Just once in previous NIN meets had this race gone in less than 4:05. Woodrow Wilson High of Long Beach set the NIN meet record of 3:59.62 after scorching to a National record of 3:53.17 in 2001. The Raiders never worried about the numbers. "We just wanted to win it, especially after what happened last year," said Arrington. "We're very happy to get the win, and at the Nationals so close to home, that means so much moe to all of us." |
