Top Collegiate Hurdler Earns 2019 College Performance of the Year Awards

Track and field fans voiced their choices in this week's DyeStat's College Performance of the Year poll, while DyeStat's editors made their own selection.

Readers’ Choice: Grant Holloway

With 32.84 percent of the vote, Grant Holloway won our Readers’ Choice vote, beating Sha'Carri Richardson with her second-place tally of 25.60 percent.

The Florida junior was already one of the best NCAA 110-meter hurdlers in recent memory. He entered the year as the two-time defending champion of the 110-meter hurdles at the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships.

However, adding a third outdoor title was at risk with the emergence of Kentucky's Daniel Roberts. The two exchanged wins before reaching the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

The championship race was close with Holloway pulling out a narrow win over Roberts. However, it was the time on the clock that mattered just as much as the win. Holloway ran 12.98, breaking a 40-year-old collegiate record and becoming the first collegian to break 13 seconds.

Editors’ Choice: Grant Holloway

The editors' award came down to two athletes this year: Holloway and Richardson. Richardson, an LSU freshman, also broke a long-standing collegiate record at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, running 10.75 for 100 meters.

However, Holloway gets the final nod this year. His collegiate record has been a long time coming. And he did it competing in four events at the NCAA Championships to Richardson's three. In addition to the 110-meter hurdles, Holloway long jumped and ran legs on Florida's 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Florida broke the collegiate record in the 4x100 relay with a time of 37.97.

After the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Holloway turned pro and signed with adidas. He went on to finish second at the USATF Outdoor Championships. He followed that performance by winning the 110-meter hurdles at the IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Doha. That was his first world title.
