Virginia All-American and Team ESSX sponsored pole vaulter Bridget Guy-Williams, who cleared a lifetime-best 15-5 (4.70m) at the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Elite meet Feb. 6 at Rector Field House in Blacksburg to earn the Olympic standard, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her breakthrough indoor season and ascending to the No. 3 competitor in the United States and equal to the No. 5 performer in the world this year. Guy-Williams, who was married in July to former Cavaliers' thrower James Williams, explains her transition from Charlottesville to Blacksburg, in addition to switching coaches from Mario Wilson at Virginia to Bob Phillips at Virginia Tech. She also shares her recent switch from using UCS Spirit poles to Team ESSX poles, and how that has contributed to her streak of four consecutive indoor meets this year clearing at least 14-9 (4.50m). Guy-Williams reflects on the disappointment of last year's performance at the USATF Indoor Championships, clearing only 14-3.25 (4.35m) in Albuquerque, N.M., and how she rebounded the following week to surpass the 15-foot barrier for the first time in her career with a 15-1.50 (4.61m) clearance at the Virginia Tech Challenge. That also wound up being the final meet of the year for Guy-Williams, who spent time back home in Greensburg, Penn., training during the summer with her former high school coach at Hempfield High, before she and her husband made the move to Blacksburg and purchased their first home. She reveals the change to a nine-left approach, in addition to the technical adjustments she has made under the guidance of Phillips, along with how beneficial it has been to train with Virginia Tech All-American Rachel Baxter, along with fellow post-collegiate athlete Deakin Volz. Guy-Williams examines the mental and physical endurance required to consistently perform at higher heights in upcoming competitions, along with the emotional balance required to excel at future national championship meets and the U.S. Olympic Trials this June at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. She looks forward to a potential final indoor opportunity this season Feb. 21 at the fourth American Track League event at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark.
