Sarah Mitton was the only Canadian athlete to win a gold medal in March at the World Athletics Indoor Championships.

The 28-year-old standout is also looking to make history in August in Paris by securing the first Olympic shot put title in either gender in the country’s history and she continued to build momentum Friday at the Bell Track and Field Trials at the Sports Complex of Claude-Robillard in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Mitton, the world leader this year, captured her fourth consecutive national shot put crown with a third-round effort of 64 feet, 4.50 inches (19.62m), highlighting a series with four marks surpassing 19 meters.

Mitton added to her Canadian record with a 67-10.25 (20.68m) performance May 11 in Pennsylvania, the top global effort this season.

She was nearly 10 feet ahead of the rest of the field Friday, as Grace Tennant took second with a sixth-round mark of 54-6 (16.61m).

Alysha Newman prevailed for the third consecutive year in the women’s pole vault final, capturing her sixth career national title overall with a first-attempt clearance at 15-7 (4.75m), improving on her meet record of 15-6.25 (4.73m) from last season.

Newman also had three opportunities to clear 15-11 (4.85m), which would have eclipsed her 2019 Canadian record of 15-9.75 (4.82m).

Anicka Newell, the No. 2 all-time Canadian competitor, placed second with a 14-4.50 (4.38m) clearance.

Andre De Grasse won his first 100-meter dash crown since 2017 and earned his fourth career national title in the event by running a wind-legal 10.20 in the final, holding off Eliezer Adjibi (10.23) and Aaron Brown (10.25).

Audrey Leduc, who finished fourth a year ago at the Canadian championships, won her first 100-meter title in a wind-legal 11.20.

Jacqueline Madogo placed second in 11.36 and Marie-Eloise Leclair clocked 11.44 to take third.

Youssef Koudssi of Arizona repeated as men’s discus throw champion with a third-round effort of 181-4 (55.27m).

No other athlete in the field surpassed 170 feet.

Joey Macdonald, already a two-time Canadian indoor champion in the high jump, cleared 6-11 (2.11m) to capture his first career outdoor national title.

Six additional competitors cleared 6-9.75 (2.08m).

Cole Wilson of High Point triumphed in the men’s decathlon with 7,558 points for his first championship.

Marco Arop, the defending World champion, ran 1:43.53 in the 800-meter prelims, with Georgia standout and reigning NCAA Division 1 indoor and outdoor winner Christopher Morales-Williams clocking 45.77 in the opening round of the 400 meters.
