Incredible Men's Mile Field Ready to Clash at the Oregon Relays Presented by AthleticNETPublished by
Prep junior Josiah Tostenson ready to attack the four-minute mile on Saturday evening at Hayward FieldEUGENE, Ore. - After what’s sure to be an incredibly memorable evening on Friday night as the Brooks Beasts attack the men’s DMR world record in front of the lively Hayward Field crowd, the pro men turn their attention to the men’s mile - and men’s 800 - on Saturday evening at the Oregon Relays presented by AthleticNET. Kieran Lumb of On enters as the pre-race favorite in the men’s mile contest. Lumb is the reigning Canadian 1500m champion, having competed at the 2023 World Athletics Outdoor Championships and more recently having run in the final of the 1500m at the World Athletics Indoor Championships. Lumb ran 3:37.75 in early February, has a mile best of 3:52.62, and looks to move up one spot after placing second in the mile at last year’s Oregon Relays. Set to challenge Lumb is 2020 Olympic silver medalist Moh Ahmed of the Bowerman Track Club. While Ahmed’s mile PR of 3:53.87 was set back in 2021, the Canadian is in strong shape having run 13:06.32 for 5000m indoors and recently running 26:53.01 in the 10,000m. Ahmed will be joined on the starting line by his teammates Thomas Ratcliffe and Kieran Tuntivate, as both seek to build on their early performances this season. Tuntivate and Ratcliffe placed first and second in the 1500m at The TEN last month with marks of 3:37.58 and 3:37.87. A trio of Brooks Beasts also have their eye on the win. Brannon Kidder and Isaiah Harris, who will be part of the Brooks Beasts squad going after the DMR world record Friday evening, bring their speed to Saturday’s contest. Kidder ran 3:53 in the mile twice indoors, while Harris owns a best of 3:58.30 over the distance. Teammate Dillon Maggard, who ran to a fourth place finish in the 3000m at the USATF Indoor Championships, is also entered. Another athlete to keep an eye on Saturday evening is high school junior Josiah Tostenson (Crater, OR) going after the four-minute barrier. Tostenson ran 4:03.38 in the mile during the indoor season at the Husky Classic at the University of Washington and recently ran 8:39.89 to finish seventh, the top junior, in the 3200m at the Arcadia Invitational. Only three high school juniors have ever broken the four-minute mile, Jim Ryun, the first prep under four in 1964 and current University of Oregon athletes Connor Burns and Simeon Birnbaum in 2022. “Josiah is resilient and pushes through every barrier that’s in front of him,” said Tostenson’s high school coach Justin Loftus. “He hasn’t backed down or given up on anything in the face of pressure or adversity, buying into everything we do at Crater, fighting hard for his brothers and now attempting the next chapter in his career at the biggest stage in the nation, the Oregon Relays.”
The men’s mile field is part of the Oregon Relays Pro Challenge, which includes the men’s 800m, men’s mile, men’s DMR, women’s 800m, and women’s 1500m. with more than $5,000 being awarded per event. Tickets for both Friday and Saturday are now available for purchase at the University of Oregon Ticketmaster website.
