The Pennsylvania native and Nike Indoor Nationals champion in the 400, representing Philadelphia’s Imhotep Charter, made it a clean sweep Friday of the boys 200- and 400-meter races on day one of the Oregon Relays Presented by AthleticNET at Hayward Field. Highlighted by a lifetime best in the 400, Horton-Mims broke the meet record in a time of 45.95 seconds to move to US#4 this season while defeating Liberty’s Ronnie Kendrick out of Nevada in 46.85. Just an hour and a half before racing the 400, Horton-Mims blew away the field in the 200 in another lifetime-best effort of 21.02, moving up to US#13. Roosevelt OR sophomore Aster Jones was able to complete a double of her own on the girls side, winning both the 100 and 200 races. The sophomore ran 24.77 earlier in the day to win the 200, followed by a personal-best performance of 11.89 in the 100 final. Josie Donelson from Lake Oswego OR held off Newberg OR's Sophia Castaneda in the girls 400 by a margin of 54.69 to 55.36. Emily Wisniewski of Crescent Valley OR ran down Chloe Huyler of Lakeridge OR in the final meters of the girls 2-mile to win in a meet record time of 10:16.24. Huyler, who ran 10:16.35 for second, finished ahead of Amaya Aramini of Bishop Manogue NV in 10:17.08 for third. All three were under the meet record of 10:19.11. Crater OR junior Tayvon Kitchen ran away from Yemane Mulugeta from Canada’s L.A. Matheson over the final lap of the boys 2-mile to win in 8:58.47. Wyatt Carr and Ruby Ihmels made it an Idaho sweep in the freshman 2-mile races, with Carr of Coeur d'Alene taking the boys race in 9:21.39 and Ihmels of Timberline winning the girls race in 10:42.60. Lake Oswego OR’s James Bauman cruised to a 10.50 victory in the boys 100 final, the third-fastest time in meet history. Boise ID’s Noe Kemper ran a US#3 time of 5:53.08 to triumph in the boys 2,000-meter steeplechase. Corbin Randall of Riverton UT and Hyrum Wood of Herriman UT finished second and third, respectively, with Randall running US#4 6:05.81 and Wood running a US#6 in 6:07.94. Bountiful’s Simon Barlow, another Utah competitor, ran US#10 6:09.61 to place fifth. Victoria Rodriguez of Washington’s Mercer Island ran away from the girls steeplechase field by 19 seconds in a US#2 and meet record time of 6:42.08. Boise’s Allie Bruce finished second in 7:01.58 for US#5 in her first try in the event, with Sydney Collier of Skyline High in Washington earning third in 7:10.65 for US#9. Long Beach Wilson CA completed of the 4x400 relay sweep and broke the Bruins' own meet records, with the boys running 3:15.44 and the girls running 3:48.79. Wilson collected another win in the boys sprint medley relay, running 3:33.01 to hold off Cuthbertson of North Carolina. Camas High of Washington used a late comeback over the last 100 meters to take down Long Beach Wilson in the girls SMR by a margin of 4:09.39 to 4:09.89. Lander Marak of Sandy OR defended his Oregon Relays title in the boys hammer with a throw of 202 feet (61.59m). Elise Drake from Kelowna, Canada threw a personal best 178-5 (54.40m) to triumph in the girls hammer, with countrywoman Lauren Curtis from Maple Ridge finishing second with a throw of 159-6 (48.62m). Cassandra Atkins of Federal Way WA, an Oregon commit, jumped 19-3.25 (5.87m) in the fourth round to capture the girls long jump title. Gabriel Grant from Crater claimed the boys long jump title with a five-inch personal best jump of 23-6.25 (7.17m). Sherwood OR’s Drew Smith threw 193-7 (59.00m) to win the boys javelin competition. Hayden Williams-Downing of West Linn OR won the girls javelin with a second-round throw of 148-4 (45.23). Kai Twaddle-Dunham from Centennial of Idaho, who finished sixth in last year’s shot put competition, took home this year’s title with a personal best throw of 61-3 (18.67m). Asha Abubakari of Bonner’s Ferry ID won the girls shot put with a third-round mark of 42-7 (12.98m). Caroline Mauro of Catlin Gabel OR cleared 5-8.75 (1.75m) to win the girls high jump and had three good looks at 5-10 before bowing out. More news |
