Gabriella Garcia, a two-time Arizona Division 1 state champion in the girls javelin throw representing Basha High and the inaugural winner last year of the Open state final along with an Oklahoma-bound senior shortstop for the reigning NCAA Division 1 champion Sooners' softball program, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss balancing both sports and competing in her final prep season with junior sister Juliana Garcia, a standout in the discus throw for the Bears. Garcia, who boasts a lifetime-best 165-6 (50.45m), expresses gratitude to her parents for allowing her to pursue both activities throughout high school and for their support in both sports, along with the intensive training and detailed scheduling necessary to excel in both environments. She explains how meaningful it has been to follow the javelin legacy in Arizona of former Chandler High star Hannah Carson and to be able to elevate a new era in the sport in the state, including competitors Jea Genet of Highland and Faith Gentry of South Mountain. Garcia reflects on her freshman year and competing against Makayla Hunter from Chandler and the learning experiences from her first Division 1 state final, and how that has remained a motivation throughout her time at Basha. She also examines the consistency throughout her career and being able to rise to the occasion at big meets and in the final rounds of competition, and how Garcia embraced those opportunities at a young age in her athletic career. Garcia shares the pride and love she has for Juliana and how much she has enjoyed competing with her, in addition to watching her development and improvement into one of the state's elite throwers. She speaks about the impact that OC Batbusters softball coach Mike Stith has had on her both on and off the diamond, and how Garcia has benefited from having elite teammates throughout her travel ball career, many of which will be joining her next year at Oklahoma. Garcia also highlights what an honor it is to have the opportunity to play for Oklahoma softball coach Patty Gasso, who has led the Sooners to the past three NCAA titles and seven overall in the past 24 years. After becoming the only female athlete and the first field event competitor in Nike Chandler Rotary history to win four years in a row, Garcia speaks about concluding her prep javelin career on home soil in May by winning a third consecutive Division 1 title and another Open state crown for Basha, before supporting Juliana as she is scheduled to compete June 12-15 at Nike Outdoor Nationals in discus and hammer at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
