Braelyn Baker, a Duke-bound senior at Bear Creek High in Washington and the reigning USATF Junior Olympic National Championships 17-18 division winner in the 100-meter dash, 200 meters and 400-meter hurdles as well as a state champion and All-American at both Nike Indoor Nationals and Nike Outdoor Nationals, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in all three events April 20 at the 64th Mt. SAC Relays Presented by Nike at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif. Baker expresses gratitude to Mt. SAC Relays high school events director Mark Gardner for being able to coordinate the first 400-meter hurdles races for prep male and female competitors at the meet, and shares how honored she is to have the opportunity to contribute to that history. She revisits running a personal-best 58.26 seconds March 30 in the 400 hurdles at the Holder Relays at Eisenhower High in Washington and her excitement about her continued development and improvement after only adding the 300-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles to her schedule for the first time during her junior season. Baker also reflects on clocking 41.93 seconds in the 300 hurdles April 11 at a meet at Granite Falls High in Washington, the third time in her career producing a sub-42 performance, and what it was like to shift to the 300 hurdles following a 59.12 effort in the 400 hurdles March 23 at the Florida State Relays, in addition to her 58.26 performance at the Holder Relays. She shares the appreciation to compete in the 200 meters at the Florida State Relays against Adaejah Hodge, Alivia Williams and Dasia Reed from Montverde Academy in Florida, as well as her respect for Michelle Smith of Montverde Academy clocking 56.85 to win the college section of the 400 hurdles at the event in Tallahassee. Baker speaks about how fortunate she has been to have her family and coaches from Bear Creek and Redmond Sprint Club collaborate on seeking elite events for her to compete in across the country during her final high school outdoor season, in addition to being able to run 23.86 in the 200 and 54.10 in the 400 at Nike Indoor Nationals in New York. She also speaks about how significant her faith has been during her athletic career, and how important patience, perseverance and resilience have been during her journey, and her spiritual connection with Duke sprint coach Mark Mueller impacted her decision to commit to the Blue Devils. Baker also explains how she has learned to manage her emotions, energy and recovery with competing in multiple events during a short span at meets, and how she has relied on her favorite Bible passage from 2 Samuel 8 to create peace of mind.
